The Development Officer role is a great opportunity to work with a strong organization and work closely with the Make-A-Wish team, local leadership and a dedicated group of volunteers to increase the reach and impact of Make-A-Wish Mississippi. The Development Officer will manage and expand special event programs along with securing new and retaining existing corporate partnerships that build and strengthen relationships for the Chapter.  Increasing corporate, individual, volunteer and other community involvement will ensure sustainability of the Chapter and fulfillment of the Make-A-Wish mission.  


  • Responsible for developing and maintaining a portfolio of corporate philanthropic partnerships benefiting Make-A-Wish Mississippi, to include national and local corporate affiliates.    
  • Serve as lead for internal and external events and campaigns for the Chapter, provide year-round, campaign-minded strategic and tactical planning and execution.  Create event budgets with revenue strategies to achieve stated goals while providing excellent ROI. 
  • Utilize the Make-A-Wish Mississippi Board of Directors, volunteers and individual donors to generate corporate leads, build relationships and solicit and steward gifts.

  • Demonstrate the ability to meet face-to-face with potential corporate partners, workplace giving partners, and other constituency groups to present our mission and to guide them in the development and execution of fundraising initiatives.
  • Oversee corporate sponsorship activities including developing sponsorship packages tailored to meet the needs of the prospective donors and corporate partners, creating social media advertising, developing marking materials, soliciting sponsors, and generating contractual agreements.  
  • Identify, research, cultivate, solicit and steward new corporate prospects.  
  • Identify, recruit, and lead volunteer committees for events and other development initiatives.   
  • Assist other staff, particularly the program team, with in-kind solicitations for wishes and other events as needed. 
  • Oversee acknowledgements of event donors, corporate partners, and appropriate portfolio donors.
  • Work closely with key development staff on all forms of donor stewardship.  Develop and maintain annual recognition and stewardship programs for corporate donors.  
  • Adhere to all Make-A-Wish America performance standards and Make-A-Wish Mississippi internal controls, policies and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.  


  • BA/BS degree or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Three to five years of relevant experience in fundraising, corporate development, special event management, and/or sales experience is preferred.
  • Strong understanding of fundraising, communication, social media and marketing principals.
  • Ability to relate positively to other people and to communicate effectively and clearly, both verbally and in writing.
  • Self-starter, initiative-taker, highly organized and detailed-oriented with the ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.    
  • Ability to effectively mange time and work priorities and multi-task. 
  • Professional and polished image with a comfort in dealing with all levels of donors and volunteers.  
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills and aptitude to meet deadlines.  
  • Excellent computer skills including knowledge of Microsoft Office programs.  Raisers Edge knowledge a plus.
  • Ability to travel across Chapter territory required.   Occasional evening and weekend work required as needed.
