Q: What does an Intern do?
A: An intern does several things in the office. Responsibilities often vary based on educational background and interests as well as what is needed in the office (i.e.: help in securing door prizes, calling schools for Kids for Wish Kids programs, assisting in scheduling social media posts or website content, writing wish stories, inviting wish families to events, helping take referrals for new wish children, etc.)
We have had interns from various fields including marketing, management/business and child life.
Q: Do I get to go on a wish while I work there?
A: We LOVE to take our interns with us or send them out on wish interviews with our volunteers in the area. If you are interested in being part of a wish, we are happy to get you there. Some of our interns also get to help with wishes that are happening in the are-- like going on shopping sprees, attending wish reveal parties and more.
Q: Will I go to events for Make-A-Wish?
A: If an event is happening during your time with us at Make-A-Wish, we love to bring you along! We often need help the most during big event seasons for us-- like in the spring when we host a golf tournament and our biggest fundraising event-- our Gala-- within a few weeks of each other!!
Q: Can I get school credit for this?
A: That's a question for your college or university, but we are willing to write evaluations, speak with professors, etc. to help you in getting credit if your school allows your internship with us to count. The head of your program may contact us to set an internship up if that works best. When our interns are finished and are in good standing, we are happy to write letters of recommendation.
Q: Are internships paid?
A: We do not provide paid internships. With that being said, we do reimburse for gas, etc. if you are asked to run errands while on the job.
Q: What hours will I work?
A: Often that depends on what your school requirements are. Some of our interns have worked full time, others have worked a few days a week. We are happy to work with you to find a schedule that is best.
Q: How do I start the process of getting an internship?
A: Send us your resume and cover letter to firstname.lastname@example.org. We also recommend that you call us at 601-366-9474 ext. 1304 to let us know.
