Amy Leigh Adams was born June 16, 1977 in Lakeland, Florida to Ginny Click Russum and Kenneth Adam. In September 1982, when Amy was 5 years old, she was diagnosed with Wilm's tumor. Wilm's tumor is a rare kidney cancer most common in children, between the ages of 3 to 4. She was sent to the Children's Hospital in New Orleans for her treatments.
Family and friends raised money to send Amy to Disneyworld by having an “Amy Adam Day” at Chucky Cheese in Gulfport. Amy became a forever angel on June 22, 1984. The family and others, moved by the generosity of those who contributed their time and money, felt compelled to reach out to other families facing similar circumstances. The funds left over from her trip established an account to grant wishes for other children. Make-A-Wish was chosen to affiliate with to grant more wishes in Mississippi.
Through their efforts, Make-A-Wish® Mississippi became the 36th chapter chartered by Make-A-Wish America. In 1989, the chapter’s main office was moved to Jackson in order to better serve the entire state. Since 1989, the Mississippi Chapter of Make-A-Wish has granted the wishes of over 1,900 kids across our great state. Make-A-Wish Mississippi is currently granting over 100 wishes per year. Make-A-Wish Mississippi grants wishes to children residing in the 65 southernmost counties of the state. The Mid-South Chapter grants the wishes of the children residing in the other 17 counties.
