During Carlie’s sixth grade year, her mother Alex noticed her energy levels had dwindled. For a 12-year-old cheerleader, being sick non-stop was starting to take a toll on her. “For about six months, Carlie stayed sick on and off, recalled Alex. “She had pneumonia, strep throat and sinus issues. We could not figure out what was keeping her so sick. When bruises and knots started showing up on her body, we knew something else was going on.” When they went to her doctor, they were faced with the tough news that Carlie had Leukemia. For the next eight months, Carlie’s new home was at St. Jude, where she underwent an aggressive treatment.
It was during that time, Carlie found out about Make-A-Wish. “Carlie was ecstatic about being able to go and swim with the dolphins. This trip was something, as parents, we could never give her. It was amazing to see the joy it brought her. It is something we will never forget.”
