“ "I have come a long way since I was first diagnosed..." ”

- T.J.

Terron “T.J.”, 16, of Crystal Springs lives with ALL (acute lymphoblastic leukemia). When the opportunity for a wish came about, T.J. chose to go on a shopping spree so that he could get a few of his favorite things! T.J.’s wish came true, courtesy of UnitedHealthcare and Make-A-Wish.

The day started out meeting at Cheddar's at 11 am for lunch before the big day ahead. The restaurant set up a nice table and furnished balloons as well as treating the group to dessert: a  Monster cookie that pleased the whole crowd, especially T.J. On his special day, there was only one way to travel-- and that was in style! A limousine picked T.J. and his family up at Cheddar's and they moved on to Game Stop-- the first shopping experience for the day.  T.J. purchased a new Xbox, since the one he had was 6 years old. He also purchased some games, so he'd have plenty to play when he got home!

Best Buy was his next stop where he purchased a stereo system, iTouch, headphones, and some equipment to go with Xbox as well as an iTunes gift card. "I love my music," T.J. told his entourage.

At Target, T.J. was able to purchase a no-contract phone and warranty so he can keep in touch with all of his friends and family. At Aeropostale T.J. had a personal shopper there to help him pick out lots of new clothes in his favorite colors-- black, white and red! Making a stop at Hibbetts for some shoes, T.J. also made a point to buy his brother, step dad and Mom a happy too! All involved were impressed at T.J.'s kindness.

"T.J. is a quiet, neat, and good looking young man. So polite and has great manners," said his volunteer Judy Watts.

While the shopping day was successful, T.J. couldn't bring it to a close without buying something for some one very special to him. "He wanted to buy something for his best friend, Midnight, his dog," Watts added.

He is looking forward to getting permission to go back to school and be able to visit family in Memphis. T.J. also has high hopes to possibly play football again next year!

UnitedHealthcare sponsored Terron’s wish through its national alliance with Make-A-Wish to support the organization and its mission of granting the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions.

'We are very happy to play a role in making Terron’s shopping spree wish come true,' said Glen Golemi, CEO, UnitedHealthcare Gulf States Region.  'As a health and well-being company, we work every day to make a difference in our communities, and we are grateful to be a part of this wish.'"

How We Grant Wishes

There are four steps to granting a wish. Each step builds on the next to help create the amazing experiences that delight wish kids and their families. A wish experience is frequently a source of inspiration for children undergoing difficult medical treatments and a positive force that helps them overcome their obstacles. A wish experience is often more than a dream come true: It’s the catalyst that rekindles their belief in themselves and the promise of their future.
