Around here, we often refer to our wish kids as heroes. They inspire us with their strength and courage as they battle life threatening medical conditions. We are amazed with their tenacity.
Every once in a while, an adult comes along and gives us the same kind of inspiration. Danny Mitchell, one of our board members, became a hero to the folks of Make-A-Wish Mississippi. He encouraged us and challenged us to grant more wishes…and do it with excellence. He led our board and staff to question our tactics and not settle for the status quo. He not only pushed us to set higher goals, but also helped us reach them. Danny loved us. Everything he did was with a genuine and unselfish spirit.
After retiring last year from Godwin Group, Danny knew he wanted to do something that made a difference in people’s lives. He felt Make-A-Wish Mississippi was a perfect fit for him. In a short amount of time, Danny helped reshape the organization and lay a foundation for future success. Thanks to Danny’s leadership and influence, even more Mississippi kids will be getting a wish.
This past weekend Danny unfortunately suffered a fatal heart attack. He was a great leader and a great friend. We will all miss him dearly. His legacy will continue to live through the wishes we grant. For us, Danny Mitchell was a real life hero. In memory of Danny and his contribution to Make-A-Wish Mississippi, we will be honoring a "Real Life Hero" once a month. Those honored will reflect the passion and influence that we will so greatly miss in Danny.
Visitation for Danny will be held at Ott & Lee Funeral Home, 1360 W. Government Street (Hwy. 80) in Brandon on Tuesday evening, September 16, 5:00 – 8:00, and again at 9:00 Wednesday morning at Christ United Methodist Church, 6000 Old Canton Road in Jackson. The funeral service will follow at 10:00am. Burial will be at 1:00pm in Bassfield, Mississippi.
